Cordyline australis - Cabbage Tree

Cordyline australis (Tī kōuka, Cabbage Tree) is a striking, evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 6 to 15 meters and can spread to a width of 3 to 5 meters. The tree features long, narrow, sword-like leaves that form a dense crown at the top of a thick, sturdy trunk. The leaves are bright green, often with a glossy texture, and can have a reddish or purplish hue, especially in younger plants or new growth. Cordyline australis thrives in a variety of conditions, including well-drained soils and a range of sunlight from full sun to partial shade. It is highly adaptable to both coastal and inland environments and is known for its tolerance to wind and frost. In spring and summer, the tree produces tall, elegant clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, which later develop into purple to red berries. The cabbage tree is not only a distinctive ornamental tree in New Zealand landscapes but also holds cultural significance in Māori traditions.
