Phormium cookianum - Dwarf Mountain Flax

Phormium cookianum 'Emerald Green', also known as Dwarf Mountain Flax, is a graceful, clump-forming New Zealand native valued for its lush, upright, emerald green foliage. Typically reaching 1 to 1.2 meters in height and spreading to about 1 to 1.5 meters wide, it’s slightly smaller and more arching than its cousin, Phormium tenax. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, though it is tolerant of wind, coastal conditions, and light frosts. This cultivar is ideal for mass planting, borders, or rain gardens, and its tidy form makes it a great low-maintenance landscaping option. In summer, it may produce tall flower spikes with tubular yellow-green blooms, attracting native birds like tūī.
