Kunzea robusta - Kānuka
Kunzea robusta (Kānuka) is a tall, fast-growing tree native to New Zealand, typically reaching heights of 8 to 12 meters and a spread of 4 to 6 meters. The leaves are small, narrow, and fragrant, with a grey-green to dark green color, and they give off a distinctive aromatic scent when crushed. Kunzea robusta thrives in a range of growing conditions, from coastal to inland areas, and is particularly well-suited to well-drained, moderately fertile soils. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This hardy species is drought and frost tolerant, making it a resilient choice for a variety of landscapes. In late spring to summer, Kānuka produces clusters of small, creamy white flowers that are highly attractive to native bees and birds. The tree’s fast growth and dense foliage make it valuable for erosion control, windbreaks, and as a restoration species in New Zealand's natural environments.
