Coprosma robusta - (Karamū)
Coprosma robusta (Karamū) is a hardy, fast-growing shrub or small tree native to New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 3 to 6 meters and spreads around 2 to 3 meters wide. Karamū has broad, glossy green leaves with a slightly wavy edge and prominent veins, giving the plant a lush, vibrant appearance year-round. It thrives in a wide range of conditions, from full sun to partial shade, and prefers moist, well-drained soils, though it is highly tolerant of wind, frost, and coastal environments. Small, inconspicuous greenish flowers appear in spring, followed by clusters of bright orange to red berries in autumn and winter, which are a valuable food source for native birds. Coprosma robusta is commonly used in ecological restoration projects and hedging, valued for its resilience, attractiveness, and ecological benefits.
