Sophora microphylla - Kōwhai
Sophora microphylla (Kōwhai) is a distinctive and much-loved native tree of New Zealand, celebrated for its graceful form and vibrant yellow flowers. It typically grows to a height of 6 to 8 meters, with a spread of around 3 to 5 meters. The tree features fine, fern-like foliage made up of many small, oval leaflets, giving it a soft, airy appearance. Kōwhai thrives in well-drained soils and prefers a sunny position, although it can tolerate light frost and dry conditions once established. In early to mid-spring, it bursts into bloom with brilliant golden-yellow, tubular flowers that are highly attractive to native birds like tūī and bellbirds. These flowers appear before the leaves fully return, making them even more striking. Sophora microphylla is ideal for native gardens, riparian planting, or as a feature tree, offering ecological value as well as striking seasonal beauty.
