Pittosporum eugenioides - Lemonwood
Pittosporum eugenioides (Lemonwood or Tarata) is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It typically reaches a height of 6 to 12 meters and can spread 3 to 5 meters wide. The tree has glossy, light green to yellow-green leaves with wavy margins and a distinctive lemony fragrance when crushed—hence the common name Lemonwood. Pittosporum eugenioides thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is tolerant of wind and light frost, making it suitable for a range of environments, from coastal to inland gardens. In spring, it produces clusters of small, creamy-yellow flowers that are sweetly scented and attract pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, black seed capsules. With its lush foliage, fragrant leaves, and ornamental appeal, this species is popular for use in hedging, shelterbelts, and native restoration planting.
