Melicytus ramiflorus - Whiteywood

Melicytus ramiflorus (Māhoe, Whiteywood) is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to New Zealand, commonly found in lowland and coastal forests. It typically reaches a height of 5 to 10 meters and spreads about 3 to 5 meters wide. Māhoe has smooth, pale grey to whitish bark and glossy, bright green leaves that are oval-shaped and often have slightly serrated edges. It thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade, although it can also tolerate sheltered, shady spots, making it a versatile option for gardens and restoration planting. In spring to early summer, it produces small, pale yellow to greenish flowers that are followed by clusters of purple to dark blue berries, which are a valuable food source for native birds such as tūī and kererū. With its lush foliage and wildlife value, Māhoe is an excellent choice for native plantings and biodiversity enhancement.
