Asplenium oblongifolium - Shining spleenwort
Asplenium oblongifolium (Huruhuruwhenua, Shining Spleenwort) is a hardy, evergreen fern native to New Zealand, admired for its glossy, vibrant green fronds and graceful form. It typically grows to a height and width of 0.5 to 1.2 meters, forming dense, arching clumps that bring lush texture to forest understories or shaded gardens. The leathery fronds are oblong to lance-shaped, with a glossy sheen that gives the plant its common name. Huruhuruwhenua thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and prefers partial to full shade, although it can tolerate some sun in cooler, sheltered locations. It is well-suited to coastal and forest environments and is tolerant of wind and moderate frost. This fern is often used in native plantings, shady borders, and underplantings for its low maintenance, attractive foliage, and adaptability.
