Carex virgata - Swamp Sedge
Carex virgata, commonly known as swamp sedge or pūkio (in Māori), is a robust, clump-forming native sedge that typically grows to 0.8 to 1 meter in height and spreads to about 0.5 to 1 meter wide. This hardy, grass-like plant thrives in wet or boggy soils, making it ideal for riparian planting, wetland restoration, and stormwater treatment areas. It prefers full sun to partial shade and tolerates periods of flooding, as well as low-nutrient soils. Its narrow, upright green leaves create a striking vertical texture, and it produces slender, dark brown flower spikes in summer. Carex virgata is fast-growing, low-maintenance, and plays an important role in erosion control and habitat support for native wildlife.
