Alectryon excelsus - New Zealand Oak
Alectryon excelsus (Tītoki, New Zealand Oak) is an attractive, medium-sized, evergreen tree native to New Zealand, commonly found in coastal and lowland forests. It typically grows to a height of 6 to 10 meters, with a rounded canopy that can spread 4 to 6 meters wide. Tītoki features glossy, dark green, pinnate leaves with serrated edges, giving it a lush, tropical appearance. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and prefers a warm, sheltered position with full sun to partial shade. While it is tolerant of light frost once established, it benefits from protection when young. In spring, the tree produces small, reddish flowers followed by striking fruit—black seeds encased in bright, fleshy red arils, which are highly attractive to birds. Valued for its ornamental beauty, shade, and bird-friendly fruit, Alectryon excelsus is a popular choice for native gardens, streetscapes, and ecological restoration projects.
